Drop by Drop

«Mi dispiace, lei muore per colpa del mercato»: mi sono stufato di
"I'm sorry, she dies because of the market" — I’m tired of answering this way to the poor who are dying for a treatment that could cost one dollar but costs twenty. — Carlo Urbani
costare un dollaro e ne costa venti.
Carlo Urbani

The Covid-19 pandemic we experienced was neither a random nor isolated event. It revealed the fragility of our planet and showed how, as increasingly interconnected inhabitants, we bear a great responsibility to protect it. But how? In 2003, an Italian doctor, Carlo Urbani, almost single-handedly stopped an epidemic that could have been even more catastrophic than Covid-19: SARS. He was the one to identify and classify this atypical pneumonia and activate the necessary protocols to contain its spread. He succeeded through his expertise and humanity, leaving us both tools and inspiration for the future — but only if we, as citizens, choose to listen and act together. Because one thing is also clear: no one is saved alone. This performance is a passionate narrative, a journey around the planet, exploring some of the looming global issues whose effects we often see but ignore, before “landing” on the story of Carlo Urbani: doctor of the poor and marginalized, forgotten by pharmaceutical multinationals and the wealthy West. A tragic yet luminous lesson, reminding us that more than ever, our small actions can make a difference — like drops of water, drop by drop.

Un puntino in quelle terre lontane,
esotici scenari in quelle grandi pianure.
E io ero lì, solo, fragile, esposto,
"A dot in those distant lands, exotic landscapes in those great plains. And I was there, alone, fragile, exposed, yet profoundly happy."
